The Fake Lottery Scam!
by Ned Kelly
The "Lottery Scam" is just an extension of the Nigerian 419 advance fee scam.
It is clear from evidence gathered, that it is the same offenders,
who were and still are involved in Nigerian 419 Scams,
who commit fraud in the guise of the Lottery Scam.
This is "How the Scam Works" 3>
They are sent an e-mail notifying you that you are a lucky winner in some lottery
you never entered or bought a ticket for.
You are then requested to contact the lottery board or lottery coordinator to file your claim.
You will then be requested to either submit your personal details,
such as bank account, name, address and contact details.
The scam now works in one of two ways.
Either you are directly asked to pay a fee, normally to cover security, insurance, release of the funds, etc.
OR, if you ask for guarantees, you will firstly be forwarded fake documentation, with your details on it,
'Proving' that you will receive the funds, and then ask you to pay the sum they require.
Once you have sent them the fees, you will never get a reply from them anymore.
In many instances they will not even change their contact details.
They will just ignore you or put the phone down when you call them.
You will also never see the large amount you have 'won'.
Advice 3>
Do not ever reply to any e-mail that claims you have won a lottery prize.
Do not contact these people.
Never give personal information to anyone, even if you are promised millions!
Where do they originate? 3>
Many lottery scams originate from South Africa, Spain and the Netherlands,
although a few scams from the UK and many other countries have been identified.
Involvement of Financial Institutions3>
Many lottery scams require victims to contact a 'Security or Financial' company to start filing their claim.
These 'institutions' do not exist, and are part of the scam.
All the e-mails directed to the 'institution' are also received by the same fraudster
who sent the Lottery Scam.
Remember
If you have not personally purchased a ticket for a lottery then you can not possibly win.
NO genuine lottery sends emails to notify winners.
NO genuine lottery uses a free email address.
ALL email notifications of lottery wins are a scam (Fraud).
NEVER respond to such emails.
Delete them and forget them.
Law Enforcement in the UK:
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) offers the following advice:
If you have doubts about a caller hang up
Never send any money to claim a prize
Never give out private financial information
If it sounds too good to be true it probably is
Consumer organisations are keen to hear from people who believe they may have fallen for this scam.
They advise people to contact their local trading standards office or telephone an OFT inquiry line on 0845 722 4499.
Alternatively they can write to the OFT at:
